"Thus says the Lord: 'Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.'" Jeremiah 6:16 In Jeremiah’s day, people had abandoned the good ways of God’s Word. They had decided that they knew better. The Bible was too narrow-minded for their new, more enlightened world view. They refused to see that the new ways, which involved behavior the Bible warned against as immoral, were destroying them. The family was being destroyed and children were being sacrificed to idols. Our culture today is remarkably similar to Jeremiah’s time, and God repeats to us the call He made to them. If we heed His invitation, seek out the good, well-trodden, ancient paths of God’s way, we find rest for our weary souls, and learn that there is forgiveness in Jesus. Father in Heaven, I’ve had enough of these “new” ways. Give me rest from the brutality that surrounds me. Show me the good way; lead me in the paths of righteousness. Heal the wounds in my soul and wash away stains of my sin, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
