“The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!” - Psalm‬ ‭93:3-4‬

“The floods” is an expression often used in the Bible to represent the noise of masses of people rising up and behaving en masse. Like a rising tide, a mass movement of people is difficult to stand against and makes a lot of noise.

This Psalm is about the sovereignty of God. It begins with, “The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty...”‭‭ (Psalm‬ ‭93:1‬). Then it talks about the mass of people rising up in rebellion against His reign, and assured us, “Mightier than the thunders of many waters... the Lord on high is mighty!”

No matter what men say, no matter what unjust and unrighteous declarations are made or ungodly laws are passed, no matter who is in control of human government at any moment, we ultimately respond to a higher authority. The Word of God thunders with more power than any human decree, threat or consequence, and since Jesus is Lord of all, His Word will ultimately prevail no matter what the voice of “the floods” is roaring.

Don’t be moved by the roaring of what you hear on the news. It’s all a tempest in a teapot. God is still on the throne and we - and they - will all answer to Him. Lord Jesus, You are King of the Universe. All authority answers to You. Remember Your people who live under the “powers that be.” Keep our hearts faithful to Your Word in humble faith and obedience. Give us your peace in times of trouble. Amen.
