"And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations."
Isaiah 25:7
On “this mountain,” the one called Calvary, the Lord did away with the covering of guilt and condemnation and the veil of spiritual darkness and confusion that was cast over all of us by sin. But that veil continues to lie on the hearts of all people, until the day each one of us turns to Jesus. “But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.” (2 Corinthians 3:16)
This veil is spiritual. It has nothing to do with intelligence. It can’t be “educated“ away; all you get is a more well-educated sinner. Education is a good thing but it doesn’t fix the problem.
Sometimes we feel frustrated because people we care deeply about are still living in that darkness and confusion, and can’t see to tell right from wrong. God’s commands seem like nonsense to them. We can see how they are harming themselves and others by their choices but they just don’t seem to get it, and no amount of counseling (or scolding) helps.
That’s what we mean when we say that the answer is Jesus. When one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. And so we pray that they will come to Him, surrender to Him, trust in Him, and He will remove that veil from their hearts.
Lord, Your Word calls for a day when “the knowledge of God will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea.” Hasten that day, Lord, for these loved ones for whom we pray. Open their eyes by turning their hearts to You so that the terrible darkness and confusion can be lifted. Deliver them and save them, we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
