"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables." II Timothy 4:3-4 Paul encouraged Timothy to take every opportunity to preach and teach the Word of God; to “convince, rebuke, and exhort” people with the Truth. Then comes the verse above. “Because the time will come when people won’t stand for sound, biblical teaching.” Of course, we see this happening now, even in many churches. There are people in our day who won’t listen to the Truth and demand teaching in their church that seems to justify their own sinful desires, instead. And of course there are teachers who are willing to tickle their ears with such nonsense. But praise God, many still long for the pure teaching of God’s Word! Some dear friends of ours told us after they visited a church where the Bible was still taught, “We didn’t know we were starving until we sat down at a banquet!” May God keep our hearts from ever tiring of the banquet. Lord, keep the love of the Truth alive in my heart. Keep my appetite for your Word sharp. Feed me the Bread of Life and keep my heart close to You. Have mercy on your Church today and give us more faithful pastors and teachers. Amen.
