"The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 'Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.' He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision."
Psalm 2:2-4
These words are astonishingly appropriate today as the confirmation hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett begin in Washington.
In the Persian Empire, when the enemies of godliness wanted to destroy Daniel’s influence, they reviewed every decision he had made and every conversation he had ever had, hoping to find something of which to accuse him, but his record was unassailable. They finally concluded, "We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God." (Daniel 6:5)
So they got a law passed requiring everyone to worship the Emperor, and Daniel was condemned to the lion’s den for refusing to comply with their mandated idolatry.
The same thing is happening today. Judge Barrett’s judicial record is apparently unassailable, so the focus will be turned on her Christian faith and her belief that there exists a higher moral Law than the human law on which she must base her decisions from the bench.
They will hope to convince enough Senators that a Christian can’t be entrusted with public office because we believe that God’s Law is a higher standard than man’s law. The very fact that they are afraid to confirm a judge of sound moral character puts their true agenda on display: to cast off any vestige of biblical morality in our legal system.
“He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.“
God is still God, no matter which way these hearings go. Man’s efforts to cast off God’s sovereign control of the universe and of the affairs of mankind are laughable and doomed to failure. If we stay faithful to Him and His Word no matter what happens, we will eventually watch Him make a laughingstock of those who hate Him.
Lord, we pray that You would guide the hearings that begin today, to accomplish Your will. Let truth prevail and evil be revealed for what it is. Protect Your servants as the lions roar. Help us to be faithful to You and to Your Word, as faithful citizens of our country. Deliver us from evil, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
