"Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may You establish the righteous— You who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God!

My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart."

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭7:9-10‬

It’s amazing how little the world has changed, with all the change that has come. Technology is different, but the hearts of people and their needs are the same as they were 3,000 years ago when these words were written.

There was evil afoot in David’s time, just as there is now. In this fallen world, righteousness is always looking for a toehold to be established while sin and cruel oppression claim the high ground. If God were not at work, limiting the evil that men can do, overturning the plans of the wicked and establishing righteousness, this world would be unlivable. The human race would certainly have self-destructed long ago.

God sees into and tests the hearts of men. He will bring evil schemes to an end and establish what’s right. During this age, He’ll do it over and over again in response to the prayers of His children.

One day He will make a complete end of evil and establish the righteous forever. Meanwhile, as we wait for that to happen, we are the “church militant,” still in the struggle; righteousness seeking a foothold while evil rages.

Always seek to be upright in heart, because then we can be assured of a place of refuge, a shield Who is our defender.

Lord, keep my heart upright as I look for a foothold. Protect Your children in this evil age, bring an end to the evil that dominates in our time, and establish the righteous once again. We long for the day when that will be complete; come quickly, Lord Jesus! Meanwhile, be a shield to us and defend us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
