“But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this He called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14
What wonderful expressions are scattered throughout these two verses!
“Brothers beloved by the Lord.” Is there any title or form of address more wonderful than this?
“Chosen to be saved.” The security, peace and assurance that come with these words is impossible to describe.
“Called to this through the Gospel.” I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts... “To be saved through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” ...and sanctified and preserved me in the true Faith... “So that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” ...In order that I may be His own, live under Him in His Kingdom, and serve Him in everlasting innocence, righteousness and blessedness. It all comes together in these verses, doesn’t it?
Lord, in Your indescribable mercy You have called me, gathered me to Yourself, and given me a destiny and a hope I could never deserve and of which I can never be worthy, but by Your grace. Receive my worship this day. Keep me close to You, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Pastor Dan Giles
