“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever...” - Hebrews 6:19-20
The word “this” refers to God’s promise of salvation to the one who believes His promise of forgiveness in Jesus. This promise is a sure and steadfast anchor for my soul.
“Hope,” in the Biblical sense, is the joyous anticipation of something that is sure to come but hasn’t happened yet. In this verse, “hope” refers to the same thing as “this.” Our anchor in this life, as the waves crash and roll and the tides come and go, is the joyful anticipation of what God has promised us: the resurrection of our bodies, a home in heaven, and eternal life in glory.
No matter what happens here, God’s promises are sure, firm and unshakable.
Lord, You created and sustain the universe by Your Word. You cannot lie, and I know I can trust Your promises. I live in the certainty of Your forgiveness now, and I await the fulfillment of these other promises with joy that can’t be shaken. Thank You, Lord Jesus. Amen.
