"I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!" - Psalm 119:32
Do you find it difficult to obey God’s Commandments? It’s not that they are complicated or confusing; God’s Commandments are really very simple and clear, but we still find it hard to comply with them. Even though we know that God’s way is right and good, far better and happier, we still falter and stumble.
Our own sinful nature with its rebellious resentment of God’s authority and its perverse longing for sin to satisfy it, gets in the way. Our spirit - the new nature created in us by the work of the Holy Spirit when we come to Jesus in faith - is willing to live God’s way but our flesh is weak, far too susceptible to any temptation that comes our way.
The Psalmist had discovered the secret that would enable him to not just walk in God’s way but even to run in the way of His commandments. He needed God to enlarge his heart, to make that new nature bigger, stronger, and more dominant in his life.
He knew that he couldn’t do it himself; only God can make our heart bigger. The strength to defeat temptation and overcome the weakness of my sinful flesh can only come from God.
So feed your heart with the Word of God. The Bread of Life, and ask Him to enlarge it; make the “new you” strong, ready to run in the way of His Commandments. He will answer that prayer. The Bible says “if we ask for anything according to His will, He hears us, and we have those things for which we ask.” (I John 5:14-15)
Lord Jesus, enlarge my heart. Give me the strength that flows from You so that I can run in the way of Your Commandments. I know that You alone can make it happen. Keep me close to You. Amen! Pastor Dan Giles
