"They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you."
Jeremiah 1:19
I have found such comfort in this verse over the years.
We lived for years in dangerous places where we had been sent with the Gospel. We had kids’ clubs and Bible classes in neighborhoods where the police were afraid to go, and we took comfort in these words.
We lived with Cold War era threats from guerrillas in South America and more recently from Mexican drug cartels, and in our prayers we reminded the Lord of this promise and found comfort in it.
Now we see attacks of a more subtle, political kind, from people in this country who hate the Word of God just as much as those others do, and we lean on this verse again.
But as I was reading this verse this morning we received word from a close friend in Mexico that her son has been taken by one of the Cartels. This is a young man whom I baptized as an infant, who grew up in our church and is now married and has children of his own. So we are reminding the Lord of His promise once again and taking comfort in these words: “They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”
Lord, as You have so graciously and powerfully delivered us and taken us through every kind of danger, deliver Memo today. Draw his heart close to You. Let him feel your presence. Watch over his family. Bring him safely home, we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
