"Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways." - Psalm 119:37
After listening to the serpent in the Garden of Eden, Eve’s first mistake was that she started looking at the tree and its forbidden fruit. Looking led to thinking about it more and more, meditating on it and obsessing about it, until she had convinced herself it wasn’t bad at all.
We do the same thing. We fix our eyes on worthless things. Some of them are outright sinful while others are just worthless, distractions from what we really should be looking at as children of God.
We have been called to be saints, set apart by the Blood of Christ “to be His own, to live under Him in His Kingdom and to serve Him in everlasting innocence, righteousness, and blessedness.” We have been brought out of the darkness into His marvelous light, and now we have been given the opportunity of living in His Ways. Why would we turn back to the old, worthless things of this world?
Lord Jesus, You have redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature. You bought me and paid for me with Your own suffering and death, and You have set me free. Forgive my foolish, wandering heart and by your grace enable me to embrace the new life You have given me and never look back. Keep me close, Lord Jesus. Amen.
