"For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you, and My covenant of peace shall not be removed," says the Lord, Who has compassion on you."
Isaiah 54:10
Like all of God’s promises to His chosen people, this one applies to His chosen people. Not just to the political entity of Israel or the genetic descendants of Abraham but to all those whom God has set apart for Himself through faith. In our Wednesday Bible Study just last week we read Romans 2:28-29, “For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.
So this promise of God’s unfailing love and His covenant of peace is for you and me, who come to Him through faith in Jesus. If our nation is faithful, the promise will extend to our nation as well. But if not, the promise still applies to His chosen people; to you and me, in Christ.
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage!” (Psalm 33:12)
Today we celebrate the founding of our nation, on the day the Declaration of Independence was signed. We love our country and the freedoms guaranteed to us in it by the Constitution. We celebrate the godly heritage of seeking justice, equality and freedom that this nation represents.
And we pray.
Lord God, thank you for our country. We are a nation, like any other, made up of people. We recognize that the sinful condition of the human heart, unchecked, will always lead to hate, division, and lawlessness. Give wisdom to our leaders to govern according to the principles of Your Word, so that we can live in peace and the freedoms that we love and enjoy can continue. Bring a revival of repentance and faith once again so that this nation can be a people whose God is the Lord, and continue to live under your blessing. Let the covenant of peace, that You have promised will never be taken from Your chosen people, reach to the national level as hearts are turned to You. God, bless America! and keep us close to You. In Jesus’ name, amen!
