“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16
Chapter 4 of the Letter to the Hebrews holds up Jesus for us to consider, reminds us that He is the great High Priest who intercedes for us, and then points out that He is the perfect High Priest because He understands our weakness and the terrible power of temptation, “having been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin.”
Then comes this verse, “Let us therefore draw near with confidence.”
Therefore means “because this is true...” Because it’s true that Jesus understands my weakness, I can come to Him with the confident assurance that I will be graciously and kindly received by One who understands me better than I can imagine.
Here we receive mercy and we find grace. Mercy takes the form of forgiveness; grace takes the form of unearned strength and empowerment for what I’m facing today.
Lord Jesus, thank You for receiving me with mercy. Thank you for the grace that will take me through this time of need today. Amen.
