"I call upon You, for You will answer me, O God; incline Your ear to me; hear my words. Wondrously show Your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at Your right hand."
Psalm 17:6-7
In modern warfare it often happens that a soldier on the ground, pinned down and in desperate straits, can call for close air support and be answered by a helicopter gunship that will pour down the firepower he needs to be kept safe in the battle and an airdrop of the supplies he needs to stay strong and continue his mission. The soldier makes the call, and then he waits, fighting the best he can and faithfully holding his position until his call is answered with the deliverance he needs.
In our struggle against the world and its opposition to godly living, our own flesh with its sinful desires, and the devil with all his temptations, we are terribly outnumbered and outgunned. It would be impossible to stay faithful and live a clean life if it depended on our strength alone. So we flee to Jesus and call on Him in prayer, with the confidence that He will hear and answer.
Dear Christian, you aren’t in this struggle alone; all the power and support you need are available. Call upon Him and stand your ground. Be faithful as you wait for the answer. It will come. Jesus is able to “save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him.”
Lord Jesus, You know how short my supply of strength is, the weakness of my flesh and the strength of the enemy. As You have forgiven me, cleansed me and called me Your own, so now deliver me in my struggle today. You are the “Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at Your right hand.” Lord, I wait for Your help as I stand my ground here. I can’t do it alone. Thank You for hearing me! Amen.
